The day is finally here!
I planned this trip 10 months ago and I can’t believe it’s finally happening! To those who are unaware of what I’m up to; I will spend the next month in the village of Ostional on the northwestern coast of Costa Rica. The organisation I’m with is called ISV – International Student Volunteers, and they have been conducting volunteer projects and research in Costa Rica for many years.
My specific project is concerned with the sea turtles of the pacific, more specifically the green sea turtle and the leatherback turtle. We will observe the arribadas, when all the slow creatures comes up on the beach to lay their eggs, we will measure everything from temperature and wind, count the eggs and most importantly: protect them from harm and make sure the young ones get into the ocean safely.
We will do this for two weeks.. then we will embark on an epic journey around Costa Rica, doing white water rafting, rappeling, zip-lines, binge drinking, relaxing in volcano springs, scuba diving and so on.
And today marks the first day in over a month that I am surrounded by aussies. I just spent a week in the US, and I must say it is awesome to be with the wonderful australians again (and a couple of kiwis).
So we will be leaving tomorrow, by a stereotypical local bus that will take us the 400km from Heredia to Ostional on the pacific coast. I will try to sneak in a few updates there, but rumour has it internet is hard to come by.
Till next time, cheers!
